Our Programs

Our programs, with the exception of the Grades are semi-structured with an academic focus. Each class offers a good balance of structure and play. The children receive age appropriate instruction in reading, math, science, social studies, health, music, art and fine/gross motor skills. Social awareness skills and building independence are key elements of the daily routine. These programs are designed to build a strong academic and social foundation in preparation for Kindergarten entrance. Classes follow a half day or full day format with your choice of a 3 day program, a 2 day program or full time. Class size in Preschool and Pre-Kinders is set at 8. Kinders Plus, with an enrolment ceiling of 11, follows an enhanced curriculum designed by our teachers. The curriculum offers reading, math, social studies, science, art, music and health. This program is full time Monday through Friday 9:00 - 3:00 or Monday/Wednesday/Friday 9:00 - 3:00.

Pre-School

Our Pre-school program is a combination of structured time and play time operating at a teacher to student ration of 1:8. The children develop their social, emotional, intellectual and academic readiness skills through stimulating and nurturing learning activities, carried out in a comfortable, safe and loving environment. All activities are developmentally appropriate for children 3 years old. The learning opportunities introduce and reinforce developmental skills for all levels. The children are active participants in their learning – engaged and energized. Our goal is to provide opportunities for our children to grow to become confidant, creative and capable individuals. Children MUST be fully potty trained and have given up their naps.  Subsidy available at applychildcaresubsidy.alberta.ca

Pre-Kinders

Our Pre-Kinders program for 4 year olds is delivered through a semi-structured, academically focused program. We offer a balance of structure and play. Pre-Kinders runs at a teacher to student ratio of 1:8. The cornerstone of our program is on math, reading, science, social studies, art and music. First Steps and Beyond is the only program that offers a dedicated reading program prior to kindergarten entrance. Our small class sizes provide individualized instruction for each student and the proper amount of attention to ensure the utmost learning potential. We will give your child the solid foundation they need to excel in their schooling career.  Subsidy available at applychildcaresubsidy.alberta.ca

Kinders-Plus

The Kinders Plus curriculum, developed by our teachers, exceeds and surpasses the present curriculum being implemented in our public schools. The enriched learning experience propels your child forward in their learning potential. Each child is challenged to perform at their highest capability by goal setting and being exposed to an extensive syllabus. Reading, math, science, social studies, art, music as well as social and leadership skills are all incorporated, so no child is stagnant in their learning. French is offered to our kindergarten children as well.  This classroom is capped at 11 children. This program runs full time Monday through Friday (1164 hours) or Monday/Wednesday/Friday with optional before and after school care. Subsidy available at applychildcaresubsidy.alberta.ca

Grades 1 - 8

As a designated school with Alberta Education, we are excited to offer Grades 1 through 8. Class sizes are capped at 12 students meaning one-on-one attention for your child. French is offered to our grades classes as well. We recognize your child's strengths and address areas of improvement so no child is idle in their learning. At First Steps we encourage children to celebrate their individualism and uniqueness. Respect, tolerance and personal responsibility for academic performance and conduct are at the heart of our school. We guide our students to become goal setters and achievers so they're able to carry these values with them through the rest of their school career, to later in life when they become the next leaders in our community.

Tutoring

Tutoring services are available for students ages 5 and up. Our tutors are qualified to assist your child in Reading, Math, Writing and Spelling. Homework support, for higher grades, is also provided. The program runs Monday through Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. All programs are designed to meet and address your student’s learning requirements. The program FITS your child.

Brain Busters

An after school program, Brain Busters challenges our brain and drives our curiosity. Students are actively engaged in hands-on, science based learning. The program is designed to stimulate higher levels of learning, intrigue and results. Brain Busters runs in ten week blocks, three times a year. Ages 5 and up are welcome to join the program. Fee is $500.00 for each 10 week session.

Before & After School Care

$21.00/day

This program is available for our full day Pre-School, Pre - Kinders, Kinders - Plus, Grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 classes. Supervision is provided, along with planned activities and crafts. Children are permitted to bring in personal Ipads for quiet time, if preferred. Morning supervision begins at 7:30 am and after school supervision runs until 5:30 pm. Some exceptions may apply.  Subsidy available at applychildcaresubsidy.alberta.ca
